STD TESTING: WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Sexually active or not, getting tested regularly for STDs is one of the most important things you can do for your health.

But why? If I am not sexually active, you might want to ask. And the answer is that- although sexual activity is the most common way to contract STDs, there are other non-sexual ways to acquire them. For example, skin-to-skin contact (even without penetration), needle sharing and blood transfusions.

Therefore, it is important to undergo regular STD testing to identify any possible infections early, facilitating prompt medical attention and minimizing the possibility of adverse effects.

However, with so many STD tests available, knowing which is right for you can be challenging. To this end, it is essential to have an honest conversation about your sexual history and testing with your healthcare provider. They can help determine which tests may be necessary based on your risk factors, including your sexual history and any symptoms you may be experiencing.

Based on your doctors’ diagnosis, they may recommend one or more of the following tests that you can carry out with us.

  1. Blood tests: To detect HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B and C. Blood tests work by looking for specific antibodies or antigens in your blood that indicate the presence of an infection.
  2. Urine tests: To detect chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Urine tests allow for investigations of specific bacteria in a patient’s urine that indicate the presence of an infection.
  3. Swab tests and Pap smear: This test involves the analysis of a sample of fluid or cells from your cervix, anus, or throat for specific bacteria or viruses.

If you don’t have a healthcare provider or are not interested in the waiting period to see them, please note that we have an in-house specialist doctor at Afriglobal Medicare always available to see patients.
