FERTILITY TESTS FOR COUPLES
Overview
Fertility tests are an essential aspect of planning for a family. They comprise various tests that can provide valuable information on the reproductive health of couples trying to conceive.
The Importance of taking the couple approach
When embarking on a conception journey, it is common for partners to try to approach the journey individually. However, as factors from both partners cause up to 33% of fertility issues, this is not advised.
Besides, taking a team approach allows fertility specialists to quickly determine if any or both partners have any present/future fertility issues and the steps they can take to increase their chances of getting pregnant.
Fertility tests for women
- Hormonal Profile female (LH, FSH, PROLACTIN, PROGESTERONE AND ESTRADIOL) – The hormone profile test is a test that measures the levels of the different hormones in a woman’s body that play a crucial role in ovulation and menstruation. Because hormonal imbalances can be a sign of fertility issues and affect fertility, it is a necessary test to carry out when trying to conceive.
- Hysterosalpingography (HSG) – This is an X-ray test that looks at the shape and structure of a woman’s uterus and fallopian tubes to see if there are any blockages or abnormalities.
Fertility tests for men
- Semen Analysis – This test measures the quality and quantity of a man’s sperm. It can help determine if a man has any fertility issues and what steps he can take to improve his sperm count and quality. To carry out the test, you would need to abstain from sex, antibiotics, smoking and drinking for a minimum of 3 days before the test.
- Hormonal Profile Male – This test measures the hormones in a man’s body that play a crucial role in sperm production, as hormonal imbalances can signify fertility issues.
- Male Chromosomal Study (MCS): This test examines a man’s sperm chromosomes to determine if abnormalities or genetic issues could impact his fertility.
Couples may also opt for testing together, such as:
- Ovulation Tracking – This test helps determine when a woman is ovulating so couples can plan intercourse during her fertile window.
- Pre-implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) – This test is performed on embryos before they are implanted in the uterus to see if they carry any genetic abnormalities or mutations.
PS: It’s important to note that not all couples need to undergo all this fertility testing. Some may only need one test, while others may require several tests. Your doctor will help determine the best course of action based on your situation.
It’s also important to remember that fertility testing is just one aspect of the infertility evaluation process. Thus, while they can provide valuable information, they do not guarantee a pregnancy. As such, couples trying to conceive with concerns about their fertility should always speak with a healthcare professional for further guidance.
