What is a kidney function test?

A kidney function test is a group of tests that provides a status update on the health of our kidneys. It includes different urine, blood and imaging tests that assess the workings of our kidneys and how effectively they are performing their functions.

Types of kidney function tests.

Based on your health needs, your doctor may recommend any or all of the following tests to ascertain your kidney health and function.

1. Blood Urea Nitrogen: This is a test to check the amount of urea nitrogen and waste products in the blood.
2. Serum Creatinine: The creatinine test checks for the presence and buildup of creatinine (a waste product from tissue breakdown) in the body.

As it is a part of our kidney’s job to filter creatinine, a high percentage in the blood often signifies a low or no functioning kidney.

3. Urinalysis: This urine test screens for protein and blood in the urine to determine kidney health.
4. Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate: This test calculates the kidneys’ filtration rates based on a person’s protein levels, age, gender, size and race.
5. Imaging test: Imaging tests like an MRI or CT provide a picture of the kidney and help doctors identify changes in size or look.
6. Kidney Biopsy: A kidney biopsy involves the removal of small kidney tissue for an examination. It helps diagnose and treat kidney problems.

When/why you might need a kidney function test

Kidney tests may be carried out for different purposes, including:

1. A general body checkup,
2. Upon request by a doctor who may want to identify the cause of your symptoms or monitor other health conditions (like diabetes and high blood pressure) that can affect your kidneys.
